The Short Answer
- 01Typical NYC ranges in 2026: $1,500 – $4,500 for a new line to one appliance, $6,000 – $15,000 for new gas service or meter work for a home, and $25,000 – $150,000+ for a building riser or repipe, based on our jobs.
- 02What drives the price: the length of the run, the pipe size, how many walls and floors it crosses, and whether the meter has to move.
- 03Every job is filed and tested. Gas work is filed with DOB, pressure tested, and inspected before gas is turned on.
- 04The utility charges separately for a new service line or meter. Ask Con Edison or National Grid for a written estimate.

Permits, Testing, and Who Can Do the Work
In NYC, gas piping work is done by or under a licensed master plumber, and workers need a DOB gas work qualification. The work is filed with DOB, and under the NYC Fuel Gas Code new piping is pressure tested and inspected before gas is turned on.
Building owners also have to keep up with the Local Law 152 gas piping inspection and natural gas detector requirements.
